Vatican City

Is climbing St Peters Basilica Dome worth it?

We paid for a timed entry, but still waited over an hour to get through initial security. Then we waited another two hours for the lift (the wait also applied for those taking the steps to level 1).

I'm claustrophobic so decided not to climb the remaining steps from Level 1 to the top of the dome as they become narrow and slanted. The steps are only one way so no return, when we were there people were queuing to go up. If you are not great with heights, be aware that the walkway around the inside of the Dome on Level 1 is high. Even I felt a little wobbly and the heights aren't usually a massive issue for me. The mosaics and architecture in the Dome are next to none. We found the coffee shop and restrooms but you do not get THE view from this level which you get from the top.

Personally, I wouldn't do it again, even without the queues. Of course if climbing the Dome and seeing Rome from above is on your bucket list, you might feel differently!

St Peters Basilica, Vatican, itself is an absolute must see on your visit. We had a self guided tour so took our time exploring this wonder.
